How to Merge HD, HDR and 4K Videos Correctly

Understand the difference between HD, 4K and HDR, which stream settings should match, and when large video parts can be joined without re-encoding.

These dimensions are typical rather than universal. A video can use nonstandard dimensions, vertical orientation or cropped frames and still be perfectly valid.

HDR is not “higher resolution”

HDR concerns brightness range, color volume and transfer characteristics. A video may be both 4K and HDR, 1080p and HDR, or 4K and SDR. For direct joining, matching resolution alone is therefore not enough. HDR clips should also agree on the relevant color signaling and codec configuration. Mixing an HDR clip with an SDR clip without a deliberate conversion step can produce inconsistent brightness or color appearance.

What should match before a direct join?

  • Video codec and compatible codec profile
  • Frame width and height
  • Frame rate or timing structure
  • Audio codec, sample rate and channel layout
  • Track order and number of tracks
  • Color primaries, transfer characteristics and matrix where relevant
  • HDR/SDR characteristics

Phone recordings can change settings between clips

Modern phones may switch frame rate, stabilization mode, codec or HDR mode based on camera settings. One clip recorded at 4K/60 HDR and another at 4K/30 SDR are not simply “two 4K videos.” If you plan to record a long event in parts and join it later, keep the camera mode unchanged throughout the session.

Recording tip: if the final goal is a quick lossless join, choose one camera resolution, frame rate, HDR setting and audio mode before recording part 1, then leave those settings unchanged for every later part.

Joining large 4K videos efficiently

Re-encoding 4K can be slow because every frame must be decoded, processed and encoded again. When the clips are compatible, a stream-copy join can avoid that heavy step. The output still requires disk space roughly comparable to the combined input size, so free storage is important even when processing is fast.

When you should normalize the footage first

If parts differ in resolution, orientation, codec, HDR mode or frame rate, use an editor or transcoder to produce a consistent set of clips before joining. The target settings should reflect the delivery requirement: for example, 1080p SDR for broad compatibility, or 4K HDR when the entire source and playback chain supports it. Avoid converting everything to a higher resolution merely because a higher number sounds better; upscaling does not restore detail that was never captured.

How to check the joined result

Do not judge only the first and last seconds. Inspect every boundary between clips. Listen for audio gaps, verify lip sync, and watch for a brightness or color shift that could reveal mismatched HDR/SDR material. If the file is intended for a television, phone, browser and social platform, sample it on more than one playback environment before treating it as the final master.

Can HDR videos be joined?

Yes, when the clips and browser-supported workflow use compatible HDR stream characteristics. HDR should not be treated as a file extension or simply as another resolution.

Can I merge 720p and 1080p videos directly?

They normally need normalization because their frame dimensions differ.

Is 4K joining always slower than 1080p?

Full re-encoding is generally heavier at 4K, but compatible stream-copy joining can avoid decoding and re-encoding every frame.

Does upscaling 1080p to 4K improve quality?
